How could I forget to tell you all that we have 2 new additions to our family!? We finally gave in and got the boys a pet. Each of the boys got a pet, so that makes 2 pets for our small little apartment. It could get crowded in the months to come if they grow at all. Two pets that the boys need to care for and water. Water? That's right...water. Russell and Maxwell are now the proud owners of their very own Venus Fly Traps. It's their little pet and they love them! I do think they are scared of the boys (if a plant can in fact be scared of humans) since each time they get close to the plant, they close up. Russell stuck his finger in his yesterday and found that the inside is very sticky, and he gave his pet/plant a scolding for getting him dirty. They have yet to be named, but like our other houseplants, they will soon be referred to by a proper first name.

After our science lessons on plant growth, and caring for plants, we found it only fitting for the boys to try out their own green thumb. Hopefully their thumbs will be green enough to help us do some planting in the summer months. We hope to get a plot at a community garden down the street and will need their little thumbs to help pull weeds.

How fun! When I had a venus fly trap in my classroom, the kids loved it. However, it never caught any flies, which is what they wanted to see. So we figured that if they hit a fly to just stun it, so it was still moving, the fly trap would actually close on it. It was pretty cool. Then we had all these kicking flies, but still fun.

Does a plant really qualify as a pet? Good for you if you have the boys convinced of that! Would you like us to send you our dying flies and ladybugs? I've been sucking them into the vacuum for a couple of weeks now. Maybe you have enought of your own.
